Ethnicity. Our student body continues to be culturally and ethnically diverse, with families declaring the following backgrounds: 1.9% Native American, 11.8% African American, 3.3% Asian/Pacific Islander, 48.2% Hispanic, 23.2% White, and 11.6% Multi-Racial.
Catholicism. Approximately 82% of our students are members of families who are active members of a Catholic parish.
Family. The family tradition remains strong: 12% of incoming freshmen are children of graduates and 35% have a brother or sister who has attended the school.
Geography. Our freshman class comes to us from 84 different schools, from every corner of the Valley. Forty-six of our freshmen are the only ones to attend Saint Mary’s from their eighth grade school.
Athletics. More than 60% of our students participate in a school athletic activity. Our teams compete at the 5A level. Boys' sports: football, basketball, baseball, soccer, swimming, volleyball, tennis, golf, cross country, and track. Girls' sports: volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, swimming, tennis, golf, cross country, track, and spirit line. These sports are available at every grade level.
College. In recent years, more than 60% of our graduates moved directly to a four-year university after graduation; 96% of our graduates continued their education at either a two-year or a four-year school.
Tuition. We have two tuition rates. For the 2009/2010 school year, the Catholic rate is $7,995 and the Full Tuition rate is $10,400. Payments may be made in full in advance, by semester in advance, and in installments over a ten-month period.
Financial Aid. Saint Mary’s has an established tuition financial assistance program that seeks to help families make a Saint Mary’s education possible for their children. All financial assistance is based on demonstrated need. The school does not award academic or athletic scholarships. Applications for financial assistance are made available to both incoming freshmen and returning students in the spring of each school year and must be submitted on or before April 15. For the 2009-2010 school year, financial aid from all sources benefited 69% of our student body and 38% received $3,000 or more, and 29% received $4,000 or more. Overall, after taking into account funds from all sources, as of October 1 our students have been awarded over $2,000,000 in tuition assistance for this school year.
Our Campus. Our facility is maintained in accordance with the highest standards of property management. The new 35,000 square foot Virginia G. Piper Education Center establishes a fine home for our fine arts programs, gives us a 275-seat auditorium, adds three computer classrooms, and expands the number of regular classrooms available to us. The recent closure of Sheridan Street to public traffic will both beautify our campus and assure the safety of our community.
